Annual cost breakdown

Total cost of ownership over time

Full breakdown

How is this calculated? โ–ธ

We calculate annual energy and (where relevant) water usage based on the appliance type, your usage pattern, and UK tariff rates. When comparing two products, both are measured over the same window (the longer lifespan). If a product reaches end of life before the window closes, the consumer is assumed to buy a brand new replacement at the full purchase price. Total cost of ownership = all annual running costs over the window + total purchase costs (initial + any replacements). UK default rates: 24.5p/kWh energy, 0.3p/litre water.

Common questions
Is SmartHomeCost free to use? โŒ„
Yes, completely free. No sign-up, no account, no hidden fees. Just open the calculator and go.
Which appliances does it cover? โŒ„
We currently cover washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges/freezers, dishwashers, ovens, hobs, and cookers. More appliances are being added regularly.
Where do the energy and water rates come from? โŒ„
We use current UK average rates โ€” 24.5p per kWh for electricity and 0.3p per litre for water. You can adjust these to match your own tariff for a more accurate result.
What does "replacement cost" mean? โŒ„
If two appliances have different lifespans, we compare them over the same time window. If the shorter-lived appliance needs replacing before that window closes, we add the full purchase price of a new unit โ€” because that's exactly what you'd pay in real life.
Can I use it on my phone? โŒ„
Yes โ€” SmartHomeCost is fully mobile-friendly. Use it in-store while you're standing in front of the appliances if you like.
